नर्मदा नदी को जीवन दायिनी कहा जाता है, यह न केवल एक नदी
है बल्कि करोड़ों लोगों की आस्था का केन्द्र भी है। इससे जुड़ी कई रोचक कथाएं हैं। एक कथा के अनुसार नर्मदा को रेवा नदी और शोणभद्र को सोनभद्र के नाम से जाना गया है। राजकुमारी नर्मदा राजा मेखल की पुत्री थी। राजा मेखल ने अपनी अत्यंत रूपसी पुत्री के लिए यह तय किया कि जो राजकुमार गुलबकावली के दुर्लभ पुष्प उनकी पुत्री के लिए लाएगा वे अपनी पुत्री का विवाह उसी के साथ संपन्न करेंगे। राजकुमार सोनभद्र गुलबकावली के फूल ले आए इससे उनसे राजकुमारी नर्मदा का विवाह तय हुआ।

नर्मदा अब तक सोनभद्र के दर्शन न कर सकी थी लेकिन उसके रूप, यौवन और पराक्रम की कथाएं सुनकर मन ही मन वह भी उसे चाहने लगी। विवाह होने में कुछ दिन शेष थे लेकिन नर्मदा से रहा ना गया उसने अपनी दासी जुहिला के हाथों प्रेम संदेश भेजने की सोची। जुहिला ने राजकुमारी से उसके वस्त्राभूषण मांगे और चल पड़ी राजकुमार से मिलने। सोनभद्र के पास पहुंची तो राजकुमार सोनभद्र उसे ही नर्मदा समझने की भूल कर बैठे। जुहिला की नीयत में भी खोट आ गयी। राजकुमार के प्रणय-निवेदन को वह ठुकरा ना सकी।

इधर जब नर्मदा के सब्र का बांध टूटने लगा। दासी जुहिला के आने में देरी हुई तो वह स्वयं चल पड़ी सोनभद्र से मिलने। वहां पहुंचने पर सोनभद्र और जुहिला को साथ देखकर वह अपमान की भीषण आग में जल उठीं। तुरंत वहां से उल्टी दिशा में चल पड़ी फिर कभी न लौटने के लिए। सोनभद्र अपनी गलती पर पछताता रहा, लेकिन स्वाभिमान और विद्रोह की प्रतीक बनी नर्मदा पलट कर नहीं आई। नर्मदा ने अपने प्रेमी शोणभद्र से धोखा खाने के बाद आजीवन कुंवारी रहने का संकल्प किया है।

King Mekhal decided for his very beautiful daughter that the prince who would bring rare flowers of Gulbakavali to his daughter would marry his daughter with him. Rajkumar Sonbhadra brought Gulbakavali flowers, this led to the marriage of Princess Narmada.

Narmada could not see Sonbhadra till now, but she also started to like him after listening to stories of her form, youth and valor. A few days were left for the marriage, but Narmada remained unhappy. She thought of sending love messages to her maid Juhila. Juhila asks the princess for her clothes and walks to meet the prince. When she reached Sonbhadra, Prince Sonbhadra forgot to consider her as Narmada. Juhila's intention also got spoiled. She could not turn down the prince's request.

Here when the dam of Narmada's patience started breaking. When the arrival of the maid Juhila was delayed, she went on her own to meet Sonbhadra. On reaching there, upon seeing Sonbhadra and Juhila together, she was ignited in a fierce fire of insult. Immediately started walking in the opposite direction to never return again. Sonbhadra regrets her mistake, but Narmada, a symbol of self-respect and rebellion, did not turn around. Narmada has resolved to remain a virgin after being betrayed by her lover Shonabhadra.
